I’m Just a Little Peeved

Wednesday, February 3, 2010 @ 07:02 AM
Jan

The subject of this week’s Spin Cycle is pet peeves.

Where do I begin?

There are plenty of people who are complaining about the butchering of the language, especially this new “texting shorthand” – the use of things like “u r” for “you are” and “ppl” for “people” – so I won’t add to it; let’s just suffice to say that it irritates me to no end.  The same goes for the proper use of “they’re”, “their” and “there.”

Beloved will tell you that his biggest pet peeve when it comes to the English language is the use of “good” in place of “well” and he WILL correct you on it.

Mine?  When people say they are going to “up” something – their medication, their contribution to their retirement plan, their budget for something, whatever.  I have news for you – UP IS A DIRECTION, NOT A VERB.  You’re not “upping” something, you’re increasing it.  Drives me absolutely bananas.  The only concession I’ll make to that is the phrase “upping the ante” – not only because that’s most likely where the substitution began, but because saying “increasing the ante”, while proper, sounds stupid.

And that’s all I have to say about that subject.

I could say something about males who do not seem to know how to close kitchen cabinets, don’t remember to run the disposal before they turn on our ancient dishwasher (or the bottom will fill up with dirty water), leave full mugs of cold coffee sitting in the microwave and tell me they don’t care when I ask them what they want for dinner, but I won’t because then it will be open season on me (and I have far more irritating habits).  So we just won’t go there.

But lately, my biggest pet peeve is this whole mess with my photographs.  Did you see that I have now started watermarking the small images that accompany my non-recipe and non-photography posts?  Because I found people hotlinking to those, too!  ARRRRRRGH!  Look, people – my images, my blog, my bandwidth.  Mostly my bandwidth.  That I PAY for.  Out of my own pocket.  With a very few exceptions, every picture on my blog has either been taken by me or is stock photography that I have paid for.  The few times I have taken a picture off of the internet, I have saved it to my computer and uploaded it to my web server.  I hate it that so many people have no problem with linking an image onto their website or blog or, heaven help me, their bulletin board/forum comment.  I understand that some people might not realize that this is stealing, but does it not occur to people that the internet is not just one big free-for-all?  Everything on it cost someone, somewhere, something – their money or their time or their skill or their intellect.  You don’t go into the store and just pick things off of a shelf and walk away with them, and you don’t go on to someone else’s website or blog and take things from it, whether it is an image or the content or the bandwidth used to display those things.

Stealing is stealing.

That just sucks. I wonder if the people doing it really consider it “stealing” or if they just assume that it is a free for all? Recently a friend who is a teacher has had a hard time with the concept of plagurism (sp?) with her high school kids. They assume that if it’s in a book, or out on line, it’s free information to be used. They don’t get that you have to attribute it if the idea isn’t your own.

Sorry it’s been so yucky. We do love your photos, though.

  2. “Grow” the economy. Makes me nuts.

Stealing is stealing. My husband’s father bragged that he always tips in cash. Why, I asked. So the waiter doesn’t have to pay taxes on the tip! he answered. But I have to pay taxes on my income, I told him. I have to pay taxes on my self employment income and 15% social security. Why should a waiter not have to pay taxes on his income? Why are you helping someone commit tax fraud? Made me angry.

You’re so right about stealing is stealing, anyway you look at it!

I’m with you on the “trendy things to utter”, annoying to no end that people can’t just stick to the English they learned… or perhaps they didn’t learn it well. I’m also with you on leaving kitchen cabinet doors open, what’s that all about?

  4. Yes there are many misused words that are peeves of mine. Biggest of all is “supposably” and the mispronunciation of nuclear. Hopefully, these continued misuses won’t cause Merriam Webster to change the language to accommodate the growing numbers of abusers, but that’s exactly how language gets changed.

  5. Stealing is a peeve? I would think it held a higher status than that! I’m surprised even the watermarked pictures are getting hotlinked, but it also shows how much people like your photos, right? For the record. IDK is the most annoying acronym I know. K?

  6. I’m with you on all your pet peeves – and it’s good to know that my hubby isn’t the only one that leave cupboard doors open willy nilly. What’s up with that?? And you’re right – stealing is stealing. That sucks that people have been hot-linking to all of your awesome photography. I’m like you – I’ll save an image to my hard drive and upload it to my server – I never hotlink! I suppose I should be paying attention to my bandwidth, because it can become a problem and can get expensive.

I’m totally with you on the male peeves. My husband posted a pic of our Labraddodle on some site from FB, and someone asked him if he would tag her with the picture (someone he didn’t even know!), and then had the nerve to say it’s not a labradoodle but some other breed. He posted back “My picture. My dog. My Labradoodle.” The arrogance of some people!

  16. Patty says:

I totally agree on the grammar and language usage issues. Most of the time it drives me nuts.

You bring up a really good point with your photographs. I often go to google images for pictures to put on my blog and it never occurred to me until now that I might actually be stealing. I don’t use images that people put their address on, but still. What is ok to use and what’s not? I am so clueless when it comes to these issues…

  17. Duchess says:

I used to study the history of the language, and in the old days I could read Old English. I don’t mean Chaucer (that’s baby stuff) I mean Hwaet we gardena in geardagum / theodcyninga thrym gefrunon, / hu da aethlingas ellen fremedon.

What? You can’t read it? Well neither can I now, but it really is English — the opening lines of Beowulf. The point is, English changes.

Okay, I wish the reason for change wouldn’t be because kids were so badly educated… I hate “alright” but it is now in the dictionary, “all right” having been influenced by “already”. And of course there is a difference between its and it’s, there and their and they’re, and lie and lay. (Hens lay eggs, dogs and people lie down.)

But one of the most remarkable characteristics of English is its ability to evolve…(unlike French, for example) Have you ever wondered why English is now the lingua franca (ha ha)?

But no one should steal your bandwidth or your pics or your recipes. Now that’s just plain wrong.

  18. Mrsbear says:

I don’t know squat about bandwidth or hot links, but it sucks that your photos are being pilfered, especially when you put so much effort in to them.

And the culprits, there prolly not the nicest ppl imho. ;)

  19. Erin says:

Sucks that people steal your photos. Not cool.

I have a degree in English and worked as an editor for years… and surprisingly (or not, if you read my stuff) language misuse rarely bothers me.

I find the evolution of language interesting as people use it in more formats – specifically digital formats.

I like to forgive typos, because we all do it. Plus, there’s no sense (for me) getting pissed about stuff that I can’t fix.

My pet peeve is that I don’t have enough time to write this spin… or brain power… at least not tonight.

Oh, and what the hell is up with the OPEN CABINETS? My child does it all the time.

    xo – Great spin

“Irregardless”, ignoring the courtesy flush is a far far “worser” thing than open cupboard doors! (just had to tease you back dear)

LOL I loved Duchess’ post and she makes a good point, but I will still side on the stubborn side of letting the language change too quickly. I will NEVER let MY CHILDREN get away with doing “good”, much less EVER uttering the word “irregardless” no matter how many times they see it on TV.

  21. Bano says:

I couldn’t agree more with the whole text-speak thing. As a middle school teacher, I can’t tell you how often I see “i” and “u” and “b4″ and all that other crap used in their ESSAYS. What’s worse is that we have a math teacher that actually encourages it and uses it not only in her classroom but also in her emails TO THE STAFF. She’s 40…going on 13.

  22. The only kind of hotlinking I know how about are the kind you’re doctor tells you are very bad for your cholesterol so if I’ve done it, I’m sorry.

I’m starting to think in terms of u instead of you and brb instead of be right back because I text a lot and I really have to watch myself and try not to use it when I have a real keyboard at my disposal. I’m very annoyed at the confusion between lose vs loose. I want to scream every time someone writes about loosing weight. ARGHHHHHHH…..

  23. Since you do own your own site and can manage it. There has to be some tools out there that don’t allow people to copy images off of your site. That way if someone tries they will get a message telling them not to.

Not sure how to help you in the hot link area. But perhaps if the tool that stops people from copying images triggers off of a right-click it should cover that as well.

If you have accurate statistics for who (what IP address) is accessing your photos, perhaps you can block it and not allow access to your photo directory.

I hope this is somewhat helpful,
